I hate mice.........

Stinker of a day in more ways then one.............
Just after I did the last post I was all organised to sew................I went out and did a couple of quick jobs..........15 mins max and came back in and I could smell the smell.............you know THAT SMELL the DEAD MOUSE SMELL..........it is distinct..........I've had some mice on and off for the last month or more but been catching them in the mouse traps.......we threw a pile of baits into the ceiling incase there was some up there.........
anyway I sniffed it down to the lounge and dining (sewing) room where we live most of the time and it was ROTTEN..............how I didn't smell it before is beyond me but it sort of went from NOTHING TO OMG I WANT TO DIE...............but it's so hot out side i want the air con on (I turned it off trying to local the smell) so we have pretty much pulled the dining room apart (only Maree would know how much work that is) and searched the lounge room too.............no mouse can be found.............smell YES but no dead mouse...........in the end I think we have sniffed it down to the wall cavity that the sliding doors go back into between the lounge and dining room and we can smell it but can't see it so it will have to stay there.............we have jammed paper into the gaps to try and lower the smell but OMG............NOT GOOD.........I have wasted 2-3hours..........don't come visit you will only get smelly cool air..........
it is very bad but while it is hot the smell should also go quicker................PLEASE............
.........take care til next time.....Chookyblue.........

I know the feeling and smell - OK help is at hand. Go to the baking cupboard and get the baking soda out. Put a large saucer of it down where you think the smell is coming from. Trust me it works on all sorts of smells. we even keep some in th fridge toget rid of 'those' smells.
good luck

I know the smell...not good!
Hubby had a job on Christmas Eve to remove the dead mice from a ladies ceiling (she had an unusual slat ceiling) and he removed 8 dead ones...just imagine eating Christmas lunch with that smell!

Do you have a cat/dog that likes mice/dead things?? My girlfriend always knew where to put the traps because if she let the dog inside she would sit and face the direction the mouse was hiding in. Umm, have you looked under the house?? Sorry cannot be much more help,I agree, nothing smells worse then a dead something in your living space. Sue SA

It's a fact of country life, I've had so many stinky mice and RATS that I think my nose has stopped working. Once we even had maggots dropping from a carcase in the ceiling. Talk about CSI.

You have all the good things from country life and I think this is one of the nasty things. Hope the air will be clean soon.

I think they smell awful when they are alive too. Sorry to the people who keep them as pets!!!! I think dead cane toad is right up there with the dead mouse smell. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Do you have a cat?

Oh No
What a horrible smell it is I sympathise

Oh you poor thing. That is so gross. Try some essential oils on the air con filter that may disguise the smell a bit

Oh dear . . . we just have the feathers from half a bird, from those naughty pussy cats - no smell, so no-one's been bothered to clean it up. No energy tonight me. Good luck with the hunting.

Ewwww!! I hope i never have to smell that smell!!
Sorry your day was ruined by this!

That is awful, it being somewhere you can't get to. I hope the smell goes away soon. I guess that's one of the good things about having the fur-boys. If I see a mouse then usually it is because they have brought it to the door & the poor little thing is past reviving & can be put neatly in the bin, smell-free. Fur-boy then gets the usual lecture about having enough to eat, it's still murder & what are the other little mice going to feel like without their friend. Doesn't work but at least it is not often & not bird life. Fortunately they are too well looked after & lazy for that. xx

I can almost see you all running around trying to find the smell. Gemma has a mouse problems this week it must be the weather.

Anonymous said...

Oh no I can't imagine hope you find it soon.
We once had a mouse and the pest control guy put these funny waxed cube bait things in the roof and said that the mouse or mice will have to leave the roof to find water and will die outside.
Please don't laugh at me City girl....

good luck
Christine

Bleech! I hate that smell, and you are right, it is very distinctive. I never know what's worse, knowing you have mice scuttling about, or killing some that end up in obscure unfindable places! (It's poison all the way for me. Traps don't seem to work on our mice.) Once I had the Ikea smell candles burning for days!

We had that smell recently and I disagreed with Patient Husband VEHEMENTLY that it could NOT be a mouse, it smelled so bad and they are so little - it had to be a dead mountain lion in the wall. We could pinpoint the spot (in the floor boards) and put lots of charcoal briquettes and burned candles and got air freshener stuff from the store. Ultimately the combo of smells just made me sicker. It took about a week, but finally it was gone. Rotting meat - ugh - how can something that small be so gross?

I hope you 'Smell better,' soon!

Goes with the territory my dear but the baking soda idea will normally work. a friend up the road had one in the ceiling with it's tail hanging down through the flue part couldn't do a thing about it and her husband is a surgeon BTW it was in the kitchen .

It is a smell all of it's own, once you've smelled it you never forget it.
I NEVER want to live through a mice plague again!!

Sandi said...

Nothing worse than dead mouse - I agree! We had a dead bush rat in the verandah ceiling - I reckon it was about over the entrance door. Phewweee talk about stinky!!! The smell eventually went away.... there's probably mummified remains still there.....Hope the air clears for you soon.

That smell is so gross! I don't know if this will help, but you might want to try pouring some vinegar in a bowl and place it near the smell. I usually place a glass of vinegar near the stove when I fry something and that helps keep the smell of the of oil down. Don't know if that would translate to helping with the mouse smell, but might be worth a try! In any case, hope it's gone soon!!

When you live in an older home, you know all about that. Hard to block all crevices in the foundation. The cats seem to keep them in check. Have you received the box yet? Goodness, it's taking a while! Cheers!

Brenda said...

You can keep that in the country!

I recommend adopting a cat, that is quite the mouser. Very unlike my Miss Priss.
At 11 pm or later I would hear noises coming from the bedroom walls. I would wake up my husband, he did not hear any of it. Turns out birds got into the attic, slid down the walls of our bedroom and died. Once finally discovered the issue we fixed attic vent, and replaced the sheetrock. Yuk.

I hate mice also....hope the smell leaves soon....until then use lots of lavendar water in a hanky like they did in Victorian times.....

Don't I know that smell!!! I do feel for you. We are having a similar problem at work. Three plum trees up the side of the building providing food and access to our ceiling space. There is obviously one they can't find above my office - PONG! The trees are being removed in the next few weeks, so hopefully that will be the end of it.
