Lucy progress and a cracked thumb again......

I didn't want to share this until I showed Sandy last weekend.....
It is very exciting to be starting to join things together.......still got filler blocks to make BUT this is a great incentive to keep going........
5/42 joined...
I'll join sections like this then put them together.......
Mind you once you start to join things it gets harder moving it all around to stitch....... Pulled a pile of papers out today...... Most i can reuse.....
Found a solution for my cracked thumb...... The last 2 cracks took quite some time to heal.... Kept taking the bandaids off of a day as I couldn't stitch but then I would keep hurting them and slowing the healing...... then I couldn't stitch for a week or more...........
the crack is right on the point of my thumb right angles to my nail........I went looking for a steri-strip to try but then I thought of this stuff....called Hypafix......... It is something I got from the skin specialist one time to go over stitches (in skin)........it is so soft and pliable nothing pulls and it stays on pretty well considering you use your hands so much but I just run it over the top of my thumb and it holds the crack together and the best part I can still stitch.....
probably won't worry about the strip running around to hold the ends down.........they stayed very well.........
Catch you later.......

Looking good! Great solution, I will have to look out for some, because I always wear a hole in my finger when I bind big quilts.

What's the old saying - "where there's a will, there's a way". A little cracked thumb isn't going to stop us from stitching. Lucy Boston is beautiful!!

Wow, Donna, your Lucy is an inspiration. It is looking wonderful.

Great tip for the thumb cracks, been using band aids, and the needle keeps getting stuck/caught. I also have been applying paw-paw ointment.

Forgot to ask, you are using a two inch square in the centre of your joining blocks? As opposed to four one inch squares?

We have something here called New Skin. It's an invisible bandage, a liquid you put on like nail polish right over the crack. Hurts like the dickens for that first second but it seals the crack and then heals it. Ask at your pharmacy if they have something like it. If they don't have New Skin try asking for invisible bandage. The applicator even looks like a nail polish brush. Works great and I use it all winter for the same problem.

Aquacare/HP is excellent for cracked thumbs. It's a "high potency cream for dry rough skin" in other words, a barrier cream. Having constant deep cracks in my thumbs and fingers this was recommended to me by the chemist. Using it several times a day especially after drying my hands and while I was gardening and sewing I actually had nice looking hands if you looked past the arthritis.

Oh ouchy-doo, Chooky, that would be painful; glad you've found something to help.
LB is coming along beautifully. You're right, it's a bit of hand-gymnastics to stitch the basted pieces together - but I'm sure you'll manage & produce a stunning quilt x

Beautiful quilt in the works! I've been packing up my household for a move, so dry and cracking hands has been a problem. I started using a product, which has been around for years now, it's called New Skin. It works really well. Keeps water out while it heals and protects as well. I add as needed and use tape to help cover and prevent cracking sometimes. You did a nice job of taping your thumb!
