you always have to cross the Great Diving Range to get to the city...........
we took a rough dirt side to get a better view................
We had a visit to the Australian Museum..........
I love all the specimens..........I could have spent more time there.........
they fascinate me............
Butterflies...........
so many birds.............
On display at the moment is the works of the Scott sisters. Harriet and Helena in 1846 at the ages of 14 and 16 moved to Ash Island and started to document with their father who was a scientist all the flora and fauna on Ash Island..........with so much attention to detail in the drawing - I think most are ink/watercolours.........the display is wonderful........
I can't imagine someone paying so much attention to detail of collecting and then drawing the works in todays society.............most of the collection was done between 1846 and 1864...........who knows what they could have achieved if they did it now when women are accepted in these types of scientific careers............. Fortunately the person in charge of the Australian Museum in 1884 knew of the Scott Sisters works and acquired the collection...........
A lovely lunch at a pub in the city..........public transport experiences.......sure is an eye opener........

A visit to the city sure makes you appreciate the bush. The Australian Museum is on my wish lis; the colours of those butterflies are stunning...
That museum looks wonderful! And I'd love to see that scenery in person.
Um. Uhhhh. {Gulp} Are those first few pictures of real bugs down under? That Big??? 'Cause if that's true, I'm going to need throat lozenges from all the screaming I'll be doing!!!
SO different to what I see every day .. wonder if I would find slugs something other than repulsive if they were from far away?... Wish they were FAR way!! lol x
Sounds like you had a busy time..what amazing work that the Scott sisters did and what foresight for someone to ensure that their legacy survived for future generations to view..
I love museums too...

What beautiful scenery Australia sure is an amazing place. Must put the museum on my to do list.
It was good that the family got to take a break in Sydney too. Botanical drawings are amazing (they were probably very good at sewing too).
Recommend visiting the Power House, I loved it when I went to Sydney
I love botanical drawings, thank you for sharing. Glad you had a nice city trip.
I have not been to the museum for years. This reminds me to pay it another visit. Did you enjoy the Show.?
I don't think I ever went there..but then I am not into bugs at all.
Its so good that that all that art work has been kept _ that is what young ladies did back then, guess it occupied them for hours.
Ladies weren't expected to do anything in those days except be decorative. And there were no working women, TVs, ipods, cameras (they came in the late 1850s) You are seeing what an inquisitive, creative mind can do when there are no demands on your time.
City girl speaking - why was the public transport an eye opener?
I was once for a very short time a city slicker ,now when I visit the city Im country and proud to be country.
Love to visit the Australian Museum. The watercolour is just amazing. I just love botanical and fauna drawings from that period. The details are amazing. Sounds like a fun visit to the big smoke!
wow what an awesome place to visit Chooky, glad you all had so much fun, hope you have a lovely day my friend.xx
Ha ha I can just imagine that boy of yours in the city....I can see him swinging off a telegraph pole like Crocodile Dundee xx
I haven't been to the museum since we were little kids. It still sounds fascinating. I think that lad of yours would still look like a long lanky country fellow no matter where he was. Good to get down there every now and then though, just to make you appreciate the wonderful wide open spaces and the quiet of home.
That mountain view certainly looks wild! I love going to museums, but have not been to one in a long time. My husband is not a fan. Those look like some wonderful watercolors!
so cool, can't take those country boys anywhere can you..........LOL
The detail in botanical drawings always amazes me, such talent....I love taking the road less travelled, the view is always more interesting than the highway...
