Googy's Nine Patch Quilt and the wool shed......

No 8/9 quilts that needed to be bound....this one was finished weeks ago....I finally snapped these pics a few days ago while doing some sheep work at the woolshed.........then just had to find the time to write the post..............
needed a sunny day as it is dull enough in there.......
Mr Chooky thinks I have completely lost the plot and why would i take a clean quilt to a dusty greezy (lanolin) woolshed........I did tell him its a dark quilt and it does need to be washed so all good...........
the woolshed is old and full of old worn timber.........
Anyway onto the quilt...........this was made from blocks in Googy Girls Traditional Nine Patch Swap in 2013........the only person besides myself who is still blogging that was part of this swap is Fiona @ Bubz Rugz
Quilted by Betty back in 2020 I found a post here......which also told me who quilted Friendship Kisses Quilt so I updated that post too......you can see a little bit of the baptist fan quilt design here......
During shearing........that pile at the bottom of the pic is the the loose bits of wool that comes off when shearing........it all ends up in a bale...........
Anyway the quilt top went together when I was still highly motivated after the crazy Christmas sewing blitz of 2017..........so early 2018 when I was doing my 10mins a day it happened..........
There's a good summary of the quilt here when I got to the top stage.......
I do love finding the posts about my quilts to pull it together...........
The press keeps compressing the wool until the bale is full.......once you get so much in it pins go in to help hold it down also until it is full enough......
Well wool goes into the wool press so I thought my quilt could here here also........can't remember if this one has wool batting or not..........you need these presses to compact the wool into the bales......you can see a bale full of wool in the first photo......at the wool stores they have bigger ones that compacts 3 of these bales into one.....better for transporting to other countries for processing.........a wool bale must weigh between a certain weight.......140 and 200kg.....if they go over 204kg you need to pull some wool out.......otherwise you will get in trouble at the wool store......
I was trying to find different spots to take the pics in the woolshed........these are wool bins........so when you have several different grades/lines of wool and you have one press you can put the piles in here until you have enough to press a full bale.......
the floors are grated where the sheep are held so when they wee and poo it falls thru the gaps.........sheep poo is about a pea size..........
if you can be bothered to get under the shed and pull some out it is great for the gardens..........we did collect some years ago but its not my favourite job............
the head gear in the background that powers the shearers hand pieces............
And since we have been shearing lambs this week here are the shearers..........unfortunately one day we didn't have a roustabout so I had to roustabout........it was a long day.........
in our shed the roustabout pens up the sheep, picks up the fleeces (maybe I picked up 1/3rd I was protesting a bit Mr Chooky had to pick them up), sweeps the floor in between each sheep they shear, odd jobs, helps on the wool table sometimes........opps missed a pic of that........you can just see it in the background to the right.........its big and the fleece gets thrown on that to get skirted........skirting any stained/dirty bits of the fleece around the edges pulling them off at this stage.......once the fleece is right then the wool classer classes what line it will go in............That's Mr Chooky in our case but a lot of sheds have a wool classer come in to do that also.....you need to do a course to get that qualification and it needs to be renewed every few years............I don't love the wool table......actually I don't love the woolshed.......I like to flit thru and do a little job or two......have a yarn and maybe pen up and get out of there.......mustering is my preferred shearing job...............
anyway that's it............onto the quilt details........

Another one bites the dust.......

Forcing my 10mins on each day has results..........as I have stayed inspired to get my top together............especially when you can see it coming together.......most days the 10mins turned into more...........
Started this one on the 1st.....finished the top this morning.......and it's only the 7th.......woohoo............
The blocks came from Googy Girls Traditional Nine Patch Swap..........
I posted about it here and here and here............that I could find..........
You can see Kerry's finished quilt from this swap at the bottom of this post.......
colour runs in the nine patches on the diagonal.........
I had a bundle of 1metre pieces that I cut into to make the filling blocks..........
gradually over the week it all came together..........
Its so exciting when you see this happening.........
And suddenly it was done...........
"Googy's Nine Patch Quilt"...........
Ok onto another project.............that list is being smashed.............
maybe I can start a real new quilt..........

Catching up....

Bit of a revolving door here with visitors...........but I do love having visitors.........
Boy Wonder has friend/s coming this weekend......
Miss Sonia (and Mr Forever Always Online) has been here earlier in the week........
finally she got here........the last time she tried the car had a major break down..........
so it was very exciting to finally have her here with no car issues......
Look at this gorgeous cowl she made for me......gorgeous colour......sooooo soft......I love it....
Thanks so much Sonia........
Jewells put out a call for quilts for the flooded Dungog..........
I pulled this one out........Disapparing Nine Patch.........
Wild Rose charm pack and jelly roll...........Autumn journey border.......
looks a bit dark in this pic but it has navy borders..........
quit size 57in x 77in
bit sad I only got to hanging it up and enjoy the top finished for an hour......
It has never had a destination really...........just something I was playing with............
I started it here, more progress here......and a bit more here.........
This one will be great for a male........Jewells needs quilts for adults so I thought this would be perfect..........Fiona @ Bubz Rugz has kindly offered to quilt it and it will be a joint donation from Fiona and myself...........
I had to get the borders onto it and I had some binding and found a backing too.........
Fiona will supply the batting and quilt and bind it.........
Do you have a quilt for Jewells?
she sure could do with some more quilts.......
NJ SAL blocks got put on the back burner.........the flood quilt was more important, then add in work and meetings...........but I did get lots of prep done and my blocks are waiting to the turned under and stitched down..........
Looking for something yesterday I got all these needles together................they were stashed here and there.............OMG don't think I need to buy a needle for some time to come...........not that I really know what i use  all of them for...........

Jenny @ Bird on the Border worked on this quilt............

Sandy @ Shiralee Stitches was making this one with mainly French General fabrics I think...........up to the border stage now...........

More dresdans..........

This is Janice @Jannimary's pile of drunkards path blocks............

This is Googy Girls quilt she made last year.............it looks great...........inspired by the quilt she slept under at my place last year............she knew that is what she wanted to make at retreat last year..............

Just the best fun with these girls...............

Laying out Janice's quilt on Saturday night...............different to Lea's below

While waiting for Lea to google drunkard path layouts on the computer Janice and I did this one.....which is what she liked.........
Everyone giving there opinions.............both Lea and Janice's quilts are much prettier in real life..........the big drunkard path blocks look great...........very easy when you have the templates to cut them out.............

busy busy trying to get quilt tops together...............
Finally a  nice surprise...........Googy Girl ran a nine patch swap last year..........This is Kerry's quilt.........I can't remember what she called it but it had Baltimore in the name..........I love what she has done with the blocks.......I still have not had a chance to do anything with my blocks............but I had been thinking of something in the centre..............
So thats the end of the wonderful weekend.........so much fun, inspiration, relaxing......

blah blah blah.............

my mind is in a million places with a million thoughts so I still have stuff to show which hasn't happened............
the cows have moved to my header.............it's been awhile since I had a pic there..........
took it the other morning when some of the cows came into the trough for water
I've been reading some farm blogs and have added a few links below of posts you might like to read..........something different for you to think about..............
This post was a longer one but a great one to read...........so pleased my kids are country/bush kids..........
"DROUGHT" the word government was never going to say instead replaced by "seasonal outlooks" which no one understands...........is being mentioned again by government....
I was trying to think of an equivalent do you think " flood = ground saturation" but do you really think it is appropriate............well DROUGHT is firmly being mentioned in many parts of Queensland  and now some areas of NSW...........really drought is the only word you can use. Everyone knows it's bad............
I think a drought is a long slow natural disaster..........if it happened as quick as floods and fires it would be treated differently by government...........
You do want to eat and wear clothes don't you?????
Well hello you need farmers to do that.........
massive crop failures.......some people are talking of selling breading cows and sheep.......now if you get rid of your breeding stock it is very difficult to start again.....they will always cost you more to buy back in........everyones selling stock we should be selling in another 12 months..........prices are terrible then what income do you have next year...........the effects go on for years......it takes years to prepare for drought and even more to recover from it........
here is another post to read for some thoughts............or this one...........and I have read this one several times...........and I have enjoyed visiting this blog too  - the Jackaroo is off droving........
a rainfall update..............
Since April 2012 we have had just over 16inchs of rain............our average annual rainfall is around 20-22inchs - the last 4 months is just over an 1.5 inchs.............with the last 4 months also much warmer then average..........bring on the rain I say............might be having drought drinks again soon.....
&&&&
My nine patches have arrived with Googy Girl but here they are close up.......
It will be so exciting getting everyones blocks back once Googy Girls mixes them up....
And this quilt that I was part of has arrived at it's destination so I can share this photo too..............
Fulltime town work has finished................I survived...........actually the hours are much more reasonable then working with Mr Chooky, no dust and flies, air con, and the job pays money.....real bonus that is..........I did have some big days to get thru and stuff to work out but I did it and survived............it is harder to take time off when your working fulltime so I had to juggle my extra hours so that I worked the correct amount to keep the bigger bosses happy......
would I do it again.........not by choice......we'll see how long this drought continues for......I might have to do more town work to survive.................
&&&
sadly I know of 3 people (unconnected to each other) who have taken there own lives in the last 6 weeks..........all very sad........I went to one of the funerals and I took Fairy Girl with me as it was her friend from school's parent.....one of these was my borthers mate and then within a few weeks another one died in a terrible accident.........life is so precious and short......
&&&
so I best go............I have a the blog meet to look forward to on Saturday.....i'll be away for the week pretty much........can't wait to see the girls....
........finally getting thru all the washing in one go.........the folding needs attacking and it's been a very long time since I had the ironing under control....that's not possible at the moment.....
best go do some bookwork..........and continue trying to keep the garden alive...........you have no idea what it is like chasing hoses...........I love my timers.............I put hoses on of an evening and they turn themselves off..................it's another hot day here today but suppose to be cooler again tomorrow..........the temps are so up and down....thank goodness for insulation and blinds I am just shutting my self away  for the afternoon.....I don't have the air con on yet and it is 35deg outside....
Hope you like the header.............
So behind with emails........
Take care........

a present & 9 patches..........

Thanks so much for all your lovely comments on the last post.............it was very last minute decision to do "drought drinks" but we had a great time and lots of neighbours were able to come.........and all very happy to gather.........mind you some of my neighbours are very close and others 20-30mins away......it was a nice way to end the week..............the last few weeks have been horrible.............windy dusty days.........some very hot others cooler.............the paddocks are getting pretty bare........it's miserable to look out...............depressing driving to and from work...........and no rain is  forecast.........looking at selling some more cattle...........some sheep going tomorrow............
Mick and Janice also join us for drought drinks as you can see here....I do hope they went to bed earlier then me...........
i'm very flat today.......tired...........i've dawdled around and achieved not much...........
&&&
In what had been a horrible week a nice parcel arrived in the mail.................
Thanks so much Susan @ Susans Sewing Space....................check out this post I think there may have been some conspiring going on..............just saying!!!!!!
In My Garden by Natalie Bird
And Susan even got Natalie Bird to sign it for me......so very thoughful.......
for those who were at the table I am thinking about it............
And believe it or not I have my nine patches finished...........really dragging the chain but just when I thought I was finding some time to sew again I got sick and started fulltime work..............but they are done and will be in Monday's mail..........i'll do another post about them soon so you can see them better........
I still have heaps to show and tell and I still haven't forgotten you Rachel but the net has been slow and nothing working right.........heading to a neighbours for dinner ...........sheep work tomorrow sorting them up for the sale yards........need to check their teeth and make sure they have an ear tag.......so once they are on the truck i'll have a shower and get some posts together............
have a great weekend...............
Catch you later

playing......

Fairy Girl has been playing today............
below is a Christmas present she got.......the simple softies book and the felts in the box......I got the darker felts above before Christmas and had hidden them so she didn't find them but pulled them out today too........
She headed off in another direction and got this idea from another book and made it with the felts instead for her kindy buddy at school.............the pink is actually the one in the box above but the colours are off below..........
I was playing with something that has been hanging on a coat hanger for too many years...............
stalled by the fact my border didn't fit it got put aside............solved the problem for the top/bottom borders to fit but the side ones don't so thinking I will put 2 more rows of checkers in to lengthen it and then I need a border.............need to go back and look what the range was.............not that I would find any of that now.........it's quite a few years old............it started off as a disappearing 9 patch.......think I had a jelly roll and 2 charm packs? Really need to back thru my blog books and find it.............who knows too if I have any more fabrics for it put away in a "safe" spot.........
Had a great easter weekend.........fairly quiet with one family of 4 here.........very easy.........
I need to take one more pic and I will show you what I did......which in-turn inspired me to get back into this quilt top..........
Catch you later..............
