update Churn Dash SAL.....

End of June update............
Junes' been pretty hectic....Sheep work, shearing, visitors, trip north, starting a short course and sadly back to work.......loved my long service leave....Lucky I got in and got some sewing done right at the start as not much else has happened sewing wise.........
Over the long weekend I had brought the Churn Dash fabrics in and started cutting them on the end of the bench.....I got some cutting done.......they look a little washed out here they are richer in real life.......we had visitors and it was cold..........
EDIT: This pic above is pretty true to colour. Just not the first photo in this post.......
Since I got home I thought I better bring the background in and check it then I can start cutting............
woops.........I'm not sure.........do you think the fabrics at the bottom of the pic will stand out enough.......pinks, burgundies, greens, mustard & browns.........
will it work???? might need to make one......
Of course I already shared the double churn dash blocks earlier but since it is the end of the month putting it all together in one post........
While away I got a Lucy block finished.......took me two days in between baby distractions.....
I did work on a section of Miss Elizabeth after this but missing a pic.........
One of the pics from being away.........sunrise on the Barkly......This highway is one lane for maybe 80-90% or more of it..........and we had driven 250km before we passed a vehicle which you mostly have to get off the road to pass.........we had 4 more vehicles in the next 100km...........
I'm sorry I am way behind in blog reading but trying to catch up......no mobile service where we were so I have not read blogs since mid month........I will get there just busy with a few things......I have started with a couple..........slow and steady........
Catch you later..........

shearing

What a week to be shearing.........finally we have finished.......
this was to be a quick post but it very long now sorry but hopefully you enjoy it.........
Its been a cold week..........some days really cold for me and we have had some sun.........others not much sun..........some days windier then others.......poking along slow on the bike is not too bad all rugged up but if moving faster OMG.........
think most was 12 deg felt like about 7 degC
Thankfully I avoided most of the work in the shed............which is good and bad........its warmer in there but I don't like it.........its only warmer as your not speeding along on a bike............in the wool shed it still has cold wind blow threw but as your always moving it isn't too bad.........
This is the top of a wool bale that is about to come out of the press...........while the pins are still holding the wool down you pull the top flaps over.......two go one way and these top ones go the other way........bale fasters get hooked in to hold it shut...........labeled, pins released, door opened and rolled out of the press..........there is no way I can move one of these bales except to push it on it's side.........they are heavy........you have big hooks you use to move them......
Since I was in the paddocks and not the shed i made scones one day............
served with jam and cream for morning smoko..........
I have shearers in my family so this is one of my brothers (who doesn't shear much now he was roustabout this day) who hopped on to shear a couple shearing with his son my nephew who is starting out..........the nephew is going really well and getting good numbers in his days...........
Due to it being to wet we have lots of wet bellies (the wool from the sheeps belly comes off first)
Here are some now all laid out on the floor to dry......cannot bale wet wool........
Here is my nephew shearing Lamby..........see that tuff on her head.....in the sun patch.........well that got left on her..........she looks so funny.........bit of a mullet/mowhawk????
Lamby and Bridget are the fattest sheep on the property..........Lamby still lives with the cows.........
Bridget waiting for her haircut.............
Here he is about to start shearing Bridget...........

If you want to watch Bridget being shorn check out this video I uploaded to Youtube.......
Also I uploaded a golden hour video I took muster a few weeks who...........
so pretty........link here
Sheep fresh off the shears are so fresh and white they are so much easier to see in the paddocks............just moving these ones back into cover yesterday so they had protection........with the cold weather they need timber and grassy areas they can find some protection in............
yes that is complete mud slop in the bottom 1/2 of the photo.........their is still so much water lying in the paddocks..........the ground is saturated.........

Another freezing day......worse if I can say that........no sun today and not sure we are going to get any either.........
11.30am  and currently 9.9degC (49f) that feels like 3deg C (37f)
Best go put some more wood in the fire...........

Wood collecting.....

After more rain this week we were back to the bikes for wood cutting........ Both bikes loaded up......
And I didn't drop any on the way home.... Several bumpy KMs.......
We talked about it on zoom and some of you said to show the wood load.......
Chooky....

New baby......

The presents I get.......

Brand new..... Brought home from the yards by my darling Mr Chooky...... Not quiet what I needed but......
Freezing cold day..... He was wet and muddy but still warm.......
He's had a bath, blow dry and a feed.... Now snuggled up on my lap wrapped up warming him up......I don't normally bath a lamb but......
He's tiny so we'll see if he lives but yes he'll live in the kitchen in front of the fire this week....... It's a chilly day..... Not much is going to happen here today......woops......
EDIT sadly he died.......

Chookshed party for one update.......

Today I finished up the other binding that needed the extra strip added..........then I attached the one above.........
When there is no one to entertain the food is very boring at the Chookshed party........Lots a noodles cuppa soup and some croutons..............
the sun was out today and catching the plants nicely.........you can see a couple of old machines in the bottom of the pic.........
I got two more Double Churn Dash blocks made..........as I am unsure what size this is as in 9,12 or 16 blocks I thought best to get 4 done......yet to cut the actual Churn Dash quilt I am making to start with......there's lots of chatter and excitement about the Churn Dash SAL so that is great.........
A few of you have been sending me pics of different variations............very tempting.........
its going to be interesting to see what everyone makes and the colours they choose...........
Remember 1/4 of your blocks made by end of June......
In my tidying up and sorting out I found some more Lucy fabrics cut out......they are not as dull in real life as here..........but I do wonder what was going with what.........there was a couple more fabrics with them that were not cut so I need to have a good look and nut some blocks out......no I don't need any more but yes I will probably be still making some....
Really its Lou's fault she zoomed in for a cuppa and she was joining some more Lucy......

So what did you make today???
I know a few of you said you were sewing so be lovely to see it.........

Party for one......

So this is the first year the Chookshed party has been cancelled due to rain...........we've had some very wet parties...........flooded creek a few times.........BUT the roads were better............with all the rain we've had the last year or two the dirt road I have is terrible........especially since November last year..........
Then with rain forecast earlier this week we cancelled the girls travelling........
yesterday I thought we had made the wrong choice...........but this morning it started to rain.........so right decision........... :(
I spent most of the day in the Chookshed......its pretty cold out there.......I had my little heater on and off but it's just not big enough on days like today.......add another layer and a scarf all good........even carting my ugg boots out there this week......usually I have some other slippers but they were not going to be warm enough for my feet.............
I've had a big reorganise in the Chookshed over the last few weeks...........I did some more of that today and what was left got sat on the back bench and I will look at it another day..........I wanted to sew.........
So I cut 3 new bindings......stuffed up two...........one was cut on the full length so a little harder to judge and the other was smaller and I buggered both up by a length each..........should have measured first..........
Also cut some grey background for the Double Churn Dash blocks and started the 1/2sq triangles for 2 blocks.........
This was a very big one...........I've cut the extra piece now but not got it added on yet..............
I was only going to cut the bindings and have them ready to attached tomorrow but I was listening to TGIF - Thank God It's Friday on the ABC radio it's always a funny session to end the week.........before TGIF ended the rain started and it was heavyish.........sounded loud enough on the roof anyway............
Still stuck in the Chookshed as I didn't want to get soaked I started attaching the bindings.............
this stupid little quilt was nearly the death of me.........
first I was short a length.........then I went to do the final join and I buggered up the cut on one end and then had to add some more fabric back in..............then I joined it but it had a twist in it............4th time lucky I got it joined and attached for hand stitching now............so one finished........
Anyway 1.5hrs later the rain stopped enough for me to head inside..........
no we have had that much rain I am sure Jules from up the road won't get here tomorrow either.........
so if your sewing tell me what your sewing tomorrow.............
I have a few quilts on the go that need some work so i'll be playing with them........maybe flit around like a butterfly and do a bit here and there..........

nameless...(updated name Mobstar Quilt).....

EDIT Thanks to Jude and Pat I names this one Mobstar as per there suggestion.........mob of sheep and the start pattern.
9/9 bindings this one was finished weeks ago but I had to try and get pics..........
I started this quilt back in 2017 and it was the first quilt that Kris @ Tag Along Teddies kicked my butt on that started the crazy Christmas sewing blitz of 2017

"So what do I think of this quilt?????"
"Hang on let me have a look......."
"I need a really close look..........checking out the seams and quilting........."

Well as I took photos in the woolshed last time I mentioned mustering and Carole @ From my Carolina Home asked me "what is mustering".........
Mustering is when you go out in the paddocks/fields/pasture and check all paddock and find the stock be that cows or sheep in that paddock and muster them ie bring them back to the holding yards to do work with them mostly.........or move them to another paddock......
You can do this by vehicle, motorbike, horse and sometimes dogs with you..........we use bikes and dogs sometimes depending on the job........
We have 4 wheel motor bikes........its a bit slower then usual at present as the grass is so long and dangerous as you don't see logs, holes and stumps etc but it is a good problem with all the grass.........we have feed..........
I took some pics first on the gate and tree and then had to wait for Mr Chooky to be the quilt holder............yes he thinks I am nuts having pics taken in mobs of sheep but hey........I met the stock challenge for Rose Marie........not cows but at least sheep.........it's far to wet to get to the cows.........
Golden hour was in full swing the other afternoon and the colours were amazing and I just loved mustering..........this afternoon I was moving them from one paddock to another to be closer to the yards for the next day.........
the sheep just kept running around him while he held the quilt up...........
the grass heads were catching the light..........the temperature was pretty nice for autumn..........
If you look close in this pic the sheep are winding like a big long snake almost to the top left of the grass in this photo...........the grass is long and they just were following each other as when the others went thru they knocked the grass down a bit........
Trying to be artistic I threw it over a tree branch............
This is my second quilt using grey.........
3rd Moda Love Quilt between Fairy Girl and myself..........
The gate was useful............and look at that stunning custom quilting by Jude............gorgeous custom quilting......
These sheep were penned up to be drafted where we sorted them out between ewes and big lambs that had got mixed up.........Last week we shore all the lambs..........next week hopefully we will be shearing the ewes.......weather has not been with us shearing wise.........sheep need to be dry to shear...........
So now I need your help..............
this quilt needs a name.......I did get one but it doesn't suit..........

No sun yet today so I best go turn the heater on in the Chookshed as that is where you will find me today unless it is TOOOO cold and I will be back in near the fire........
Its nearly 8am and still only 3.7 degC and the wind is supposed to pick up again today..........Looks like it could be cloudy all day.........bbbbrrrrrr
