shearing

What a week to be shearing.........finally we have finished.......
this was to be a quick post but it very long now sorry but hopefully you enjoy it.........
Its been a cold week..........some days really cold for me and we have had some sun.........others not much sun..........some days windier then others.......poking along slow on the bike is not too bad all rugged up but if moving faster OMG.........
think most was 12 deg felt like about 7 degC
Thankfully I avoided most of the work in the shed............which is good and bad........its warmer in there but I don't like it.........its only warmer as your not speeding along on a bike............in the wool shed it still has cold wind blow threw but as your always moving it isn't too bad.........
This is the top of a wool bale that is about to come out of the press...........while the pins are still holding the wool down you pull the top flaps over.......two go one way and these top ones go the other way........bale fasters get hooked in to hold it shut...........labeled, pins released, door opened and rolled out of the press..........there is no way I can move one of these bales except to push it on it's side.........they are heavy........you have big hooks you use to move them......
Since I was in the paddocks and not the shed i made scones one day............
served with jam and cream for morning smoko..........
I have shearers in my family so this is one of my brothers (who doesn't shear much now he was roustabout this day) who hopped on to shear a couple shearing with his son my nephew who is starting out..........the nephew is going really well and getting good numbers in his days...........
Due to it being to wet we have lots of wet bellies (the wool from the sheeps belly comes off first)
Here are some now all laid out on the floor to dry......cannot bale wet wool........
Here is my nephew shearing Lamby..........see that tuff on her head.....in the sun patch.........well that got left on her..........she looks so funny.........bit of a mullet/mowhawk????
Lamby and Bridget are the fattest sheep on the property..........Lamby still lives with the cows.........
Bridget waiting for her haircut.............
Here he is about to start shearing Bridget...........

If you want to watch Bridget being shorn check out this video I uploaded to Youtube.......
Also I uploaded a golden hour video I took muster a few weeks who...........
so pretty........link here
Sheep fresh off the shears are so fresh and white they are so much easier to see in the paddocks............just moving these ones back into cover yesterday so they had protection........with the cold weather they need timber and grassy areas they can find some protection in............
yes that is complete mud slop in the bottom 1/2 of the photo.........their is still so much water lying in the paddocks..........the ground is saturated.........

Another freezing day......worse if I can say that........no sun today and not sure we are going to get any either.........
11.30am  and currently 9.9degC (49f) that feels like 3deg C (37f)
Best go put some more wood in the fire...........
Keep the love of blogging alive.......
Catch you later.........
Chookyblue.......

I liked the videos. Just wondering how many sheep you have, and how long does the shearing last?

God bless.

Loved the video of Bridget getting shorn but she'll be feeling cold now :-(
Have you got a spare quilt??

You look so cold! But I love your photos.
And now I want scones.
So will Bridget be dancing outside the Chookshed hoping you will let her in to stay warm?? ;)
Loved the Golden Hour video, too.

Interesting stuff. You think you're cold, how do the sheep feel? They just lost their woolly coat.

Your scones look good....poor sheep, do they feel the cold without all their wool? I certainly would....it has been horribly cold here today too, hasn't felt like much more than 6 deg all day.

It's been nice and cold here too... the scones look delish and I bet everyone was happy to dig into them at smoko! Shearers are so clever I think. My dfil used to shear up north when he was younger, hubby was never interested! xx

Nice to see your farm and what takes place. I don't know much about shearing, so it was nice to see. Christine xx

I almost want to knit Bridget a coat...LOL

Loved watching your nephew shearing - usually I see them going hell for leather.

I'd love a scone - thanks!

Watching Bridget brought me to mind of my first covid haircut!

Why do you shear in fall and not spring
. Just wondering.

Why do you shear in winter? We used to shear at the star of summer so they would not be to hot.

Busy times on the farm..

Those scones look delicious…

Thanks for your comment on my blog, but also, for the refresher lesson on sheep sheering! Yes, we had sheep on our farm in center of U.S. - only on a very small scale! Now that farm is a shopping center and the farm activities are lovely memories. Good photos, thank you. 8-))

Lovely to watch you nephew shear Bridget. The scones look yummy. I hear you with it being cold. We went to Mum's the other day & i was tempted to light the fire whilst there to warm up. Neighbour was telling us how cold its been there. Time to finish clearing the house out so we don't have to be there during winter. :) hugs,

Great post Chooky, love your loooong posts!! Not much fun trying to shear when it's wet getting the sheep in is it? Think I might prefer the getting sheep in job instead of in the shed too.

Are you still shearing the sheeps. You look so cold. Bakery looks good and jummy.

You have been so busy. I still don't understand why they shear the poor sheep in winter when its so cold. Chilly ! Great to see your nephew shearing.

I’m glad you finally get your shearing completed. Not the best weather for it. He did a good job on Bridget. She was very well behaved for him. Stay warm.

An educational post. Don't the sheep get too cold after being sheared? Do they need some knitted jumpers? It is a tough life for farmers and their livestock. I don't envy you being out in the cold. Yummy scones . Shall check out the You Tube video.

Busy time for you all. You look very COVID safe with your winter gear on.

Great videos Chooky. Bridget will need a quilt to keep her warm when she is tap dancing outside the chookshed now. No fun for you being out in the cold on the bike.
