Do you use a thimble...... Years ago I thought they were useless as I tried to use mine on my middle finger but I couldn't do things properly like holding the needle etc...... But then some time later I tried it on my next finger over that I don't use while stitching and it worked perfectly and didn't annoy me..... But I forget to use them unless I have a sore finger and as I have stabbed my middle finger with the end of the needle several times several days in a row it is toooo sore to do again so I have been using it......
So do you use a thimble?
Which finger do you put it on?
Catch you later

I can't get on with thimbles at all. I think I've tried them all and on all fingers. I work without one now. Yes it means I've got a bit of a callous on my middle finger but if you don't know it's there you can't see it xx
I still work without one as I've not fou done that works girls me :(
I am devoted to my thimble, and use it on tall man.
The only thimble that I had found that I could use was a leather one - BUT - in the cheapo Japanese stores they have silicone "things" for fingers - I haven't tried one yet - but a friend of mine swears by them - esp for EPP. I'll send you one Chookyblue - cause I bet you don't yet have a Daiso in *** where you live!!
I don't use a thimble but have some little stick on dots that you put on a sore spot....use them when binding.
I don't know... I use one when I am getting a sore finger but I always manage to hold the finger with it on out of the way... I like the leather one when I am sewing on a bind and a traditional metal one for appliqué and piecing. Although I do have a great thimble collection. The girls in our group bring them home from trips fro each other. I will blog some pics.
I don't wear one very often, but occasionally try. I usually forget. Mum, on the other hand, never sews without hers and was in quite a tizz the other day as she thought she had lost her favourite one, which had been her mother' s favourite when she was alive. Fortunately it was found, so she can keep stitching.
Hi Chooky yes i use a thimble its a silicene one and it fits your finger and doesnt fall off,i am like you and forget to use it until my finger starts getting holes in it,lol.xx
Always use a thimble. I have a thimble lady thimble (the old style because of my claws) and got a backup a couple of years later, tried again last year when she was selling the last of the old style and had to send it back 3 times and gave up in the end because I could get the right size (as original size is worn out) so I also have one for when I loose lots of kg and I have skinnier fingers.
sometimes I use leather ones on my other hand when I am really doing lots of stitching and fingers a raw. Don't have much luck with the sticky dots and I have used the silicon ones as well but they don't last very long.
Yes, I use a thimble. One of the metal ones with heavy brass top so when you are pushing extra hard, the needle doesn't slip and stab you.
Grandma sewed a lot and made sure I had a silver thimble when I was high school age. For a while I just wore it on my middle finger but little by little it came to be very useful.
When I do a lot of hand stitching, it becomes a part of me ... I have even discovered myself wearing it while I go to the kitchen to stir a pot of soup!
I've tried to wear thimbles, but - so far - I can't seem to get comfortable. If my fingers get sore, I use paper tape one uses to keep gauze on a wound. Works great. No more little spots of blood on my stitching ;)
Definitely a thimble girl here - I have several types, but my faves are my leather ones from Clover - they also suit my fingers best as I have acrylic nails...
I love your pic, it looks like an EPP promo from a mag or website, very stylish!
I use a leather stick on dot on my "naughty finger" when I quilt. I couldn't quilt without it. I don't need one when I applique, though.
I went for ages without using a thimble, but I do so much EPP and hand-quilting that I was pretty much bruising the tips of my middle finger and thumb (respectively) that I had to find a thimble I could use. After trying quite a few, I now use the clover silicone thimbles (http://www.amazon.com/Clover-6026-Medium-Protect-Thimble/dp/B002OVGJDU) and find them pretty comfortable. On my middle finger for EPP, and I shift it to my thumb when I quilt. Not perfect, but beats bruises and holes in my finger tips :)
No thimble - only sore fingers.. Guess that's why I turn to knitting after some time of hand sewing - to rest my fingers..
I only use a thimble when I am hand quilting. I wear it on my middle finger. I know I don't hand quilt 'correctly' because I basically use the side are of the thimble not the tip.
I do use a thimble and on my middle finger as well...I used to not use one, but then decided I did not want callouses on the tips of my finger...not only that, it keeps them from getting so sore.
Tried a few thimbles never found one I loved, but think it is the sort of thing you have to persist with. If I get sore finger I use the plastic stick on ovals, but cut them in half and use on the tip of my fingers.
I can't sew without my thimble on my middle finger... I use an old one that was my mothers... I think a lot of it is habit ...

I have a really old little black leather thimble that I love but it has one tiny spot that I get a prick from now and then... I also like the stick on plastic dots if I have a sore finger, they are awesome and I have tried the silicone one....Anything is better than a hole in your naughty finger....he he!
Wow, I have so many different kinds of thimbles, it is not funny! There is one that I have decided I prefer but like you, I tend to forget about it unless I have a sore finger.

I haven't had any success with thimbles, I usually try the sticky circles once I get a hole in my finger from the blunt end of the needle! But I am still looking....
I mostly use a thimble, I have a tailors thimble it has no end in it and so I use only the side of it. Sometimes I forget I have it on as it is very comfy.
I feel lost without my thimble.....I have a metal thimble that only covers the front part of my tall man finger....
I use a thimble when I have to use a bit of pressure, like binding and fused applique. I wear it on my tall man finger. It certainly saves my finger from getting sore.

I have tried many, and cannot make thimbles work for me...but I need too! My fingers get so sore, I cannot sew...and that is an emergency, isn't it??
Wish I could but I have never found the right one. I hate that pop noise that happens when the eye end of the needle pops into your skin - oooowwww.
Hi Chooky......I can't use a thimble as its too awkward and the thimble finger usually sticks out and I avoid using that finger altogether!!...lol....But i have sourced some leather adhesive dots for my shop and they're fantastic. I sell oodles of them.....you get 12 for $14 and you reuse them so good value....I'll bring some to show you at retreat......Sandy
Hi chooky, yes i too devoted to using a thimble. Feel lost without it. I have a metal one i purchased from thimble lady a few years back, but is a bit tricky getting perfect size but so worth the effort . I have one with hole in back so finger doesnt feel suffocated.
Oh and middle finger on hand I'm not stitching with
I can't live without my Thimble!… they are all over the house..under lounges etc!!.. I wear it on my "naughty finger" and even wear it under my gardening gloves as I always wear a hole in the finger of that glove. I have been known to cook dinner with it on as I forget its there!! Xx
Great post! I tried with middle finger but like you couldn't hold the needle and left it at that and got holes! Will try the next finger...never thought of that!
hehe...I'm the same as you. Stab my middle finger so many times and its too sore so on goes the thimble!
Like many of the other comments..been there tried that , but have never mastered the use of a thimble, on my middle finger so I usually end up with a sore finger where the needle goes through the end..I suppose practise would help but I am yet to find the perfect thimble to use..
