a traumatic day for Curly Pops.......

Wow what a day yesterday was................it was very traumatic.....Curly Pops first starred on my blog here.......she became a very special poddy calf.............most posts with her in them here........she has become part of our nearly everyday life...........esp for the kids she is a very special cow as she has remained very quite and the kids can do almost anything with her which is very uncommon..........only a few weeks ago Bookworm was riding her - well until she got sick of him and off he went...........
&&&
remember I said Curly Pops was going to calve soon the other day.............
well the kids have been riding the motor bikes over what seems like a 1000 times a day to check the heifers and yesterday morning she was off on her own and very close to calving.............
not long later they went back and she had prolapsed........(i thought about pics but really it was way too big and disgusting to blog).........
...seriously bad news........dh was in town so the neighbours came over.............looked pretty bad............since she is so precious we called the vet..............(Curly Pops mother died from a prolapse as she calved in the night and was dead when we found her)
&&
.......we found her calf hiding in the grass where she had him and he was covered in slimmy stuff...........while she was down in the paddocks we got the calf on sucking a few times before the vet arrived........the kids had some rags and were trying to clean up the calf.....
&&
The Vet arrived and said oh it's never good when they have their name on the ear tag........
...she was looking pretty bad at this stage .......the vet proceeded to work on her and got everything back inside and stitched up.....gave her numerous needles and bags of stuff and we got her back up on her feet and off she went.............the bill won't be good but it would be better then the sad people I would of had to live with if she died..........and if she and the calf live they would recoup the money..........
&&
No pressure on the vet..........6 adults and 5 children all looking on while he worked away on Curly Pops.......
......I was really worried about her she looked terrible but we left her alone and went back a few hours.............she was off sulking on her own and was not keen to be near us but I got her to drink some water and we went and got some oats and more water and now she thinks we are all ok again.................we we took more food and water back over we found the calf again and she started to show interest in him and he got a great feed and she started licking him up clean...............excellent sign...............she has made it thru the night so I think and HOPE all will be ok.............poor Mumma.........
cute big strong boy calf..........
I hope I never have to use a needle and thread the vet used to hold things back inside............
Anyway while waiting with Curly Pops yesterday arvo I snapped a few other calves.........
Another "who's your Daddy" moment 2 days old
Q2 Cutie's baby (I lost out on Little Miss Cutie)
The baby I showed you the other day...............
what they should all look like..........
Today I had to make a pile of scones............made 2 trays for a fundraiser today..........
and of course with everyone here (8 at the moment) I had to make some for them too.........
Lets hope today is less eventful...........hope your having a great Sunday...........
Catch you later..............

Poor curly pops. I hope she and her baby (is that the right term to use) stay well and that she recovers and is back to her old self.

The calves are adorable.
Scones look delish. Some butter and strawberry jam - YUM!

That really looks traumatic... I guess her breeding days are over or will she make a complete recovery... is there a genetic predisposition to prolapse? So very sad for all concerned lucky she wasn't left for too long. fingers crossed she lives a long and happy life.

Hope Curly Pops is on the mend! Looks like the vet did a good job, we had a vet once use an old and clean of course beer bottle to push it all back in, was amazing to watch! And the cow came thru good as gold! Vet bill was alittle bit of a shock thou! but what is money for but to spend! The things we do for family, happy stitching, Michelle.

OMG makes me want to cross my legs!! Ouch, but so wonderful that the vet could help her so well, does he know his great work is famous now?! I'm loving these gorgeous calf pics Chooky, I had never seen one of those cows with the white ring around their middle (can't remember what you called them) until we moved to Vic, I call them designer cows!!

Can you post scones? xo

Poor Curly Pops, I remember why I am a city girl. I get way too involved with the animals. How come my scones didn't look like those? Hehehe. I need more practice.

Poor Curly Pops, the things the female of any species have to go through, looks like the vet used baling twine to sew her up. Your scones look delish, enticing enough to get me up and make some for lunch today.
How bizarre the word verification is "coment"

Wow Donna -- traumatic sounds like it doesn't begin to describe it! Lucky Curly Pops that you guys were watching out for her. I hope she'll be ok. Does this mean she can't calve again?

A prolapse with any animal is just awful, we lost a couple of horses due to that - sadly both of them foaled during the night so we didn't get to them intime, unlike lucky Curley Pops - she's one lucky cow. An those scones, yummy!!

Oh your poor cow. I hope she continues to improve and the little one thrives.
When I was visiting my parents/brothers farm summer 2010, I assisted my brother who was helping his favourite heifer give birth. The position of the calf was terrible. We both tried our best, but in the end my brother had to use a special machine (apparatus, I don't know what it is called)to bring the calf into the world. Unfortunately the calf was still born. In a cruel twist of fate, another heifer went into labour the same day and her calf was a breech birth. That little calf died too, so it was a horrendous day for my brother. I'm just glad I was there to support him.
Farming, it has its joys and disappointments doesn't it? Thanks for sharing your story.

OMG! I thought I had problems with Licky Lou (cat) the vet and her ear infection yesterday. Nothing compared to your problems with Curly Pops. So glad she's back on her feet and bonding with her baby but as for her poor bottom.... ouch! Think you need to give the vet stitching lessons! He can knock his bill dolinsoff your tution fees.
Now... do you happen to have any of those farmhouse scones left... yum.

HI Chooky! I am so sorry about the prolapse...I saw many as I was following the vet around as a youngster...thought I was going to be a vet at one time. My favorite ewe Gloria also prolapsed...what a glorious mess it was cleaning that all up, but all was put to right and the dear thing had babies next year and was OK!!! Miraculous!!

May Kristin said...

Wow, what a day you've had! Hope Curly Pops will be fine again, she's lucky to have you around!
Take care!

Lucky you were checking her so much, why is it always the favourites?? Tink's Made, lost her calf and went down...for 3 weeks!!We were sure she was a gonner, but no...up and around! Looks a lot like curly pops. Hard decision now will be calving her again...she may be a real pet now! And I don't mind paying the vet bill when they live, hurts a lot when they die!

Hi chooky, Oh dear we had the same problem about 10 months ago. We ended up with no calf and no cow and not trying to alarm you an 800 dollar vet bill and it was the rodeo bull from 3 propertys over. We told them two !! Stupid boys want to practise rodeo bullriding but do not care about what their bulls do. I hope mum and calf recover. Good luck with all the visitors over easter. Regards Fee.
