Comments & word verification......

UPDATE have done a new post on this..............you can find it here

Was talking to a friend today about the new comment word verification..............I know it is driving everyone nuts......No idea why they changed it as the old one was working fine.........I hate turning it off as I always get spam comments once i do it.............but for the last week or so i have turn it off and changed the "who can comment" settings and have only got one spam comment so I thought I would share if your interested..........and the spam comment was sitting in the comments TAB spam area so not published so I thought that was great............
I have changed my blog, Stitch-a-long and Snappy Friends and all are fine at this stage. If things change I will turn word verification back on. BUT it is driving me nuts on the few blogs I have commented on............
I am still using the old interface not changed to the new one as I can't control the users in a group blog like I can in the old one............
Sorry it's a bit different in the new interface (just looked)  so you might need to go to the comments and the email and mobile areas.........
If you want to go back to the old interface go to the dash board and click on the cog/wheel top right corner then a menu drops down then click on old blogger interface..............

See on the settings ---> comments tab below I have changed the who can comment to Users with a Google account. Most bloggers have one and if they don't (ie Typepad or Wordpress users) they can set up a profile anyway so they can comment plus include a link to their blog address
in the new interface it is under settings ---->>posts and comments........
Also I have for a long time had comment moderation turned on for comments on posts over XXX days old. I used to have this at 10 but have changed it to 5 days. Most spam was left on older posts anyway.
But usually people comment on your posts within 5 days and if they haven't they won't mind you publishing their comment once you have read it.
Make sure you have your email address in there so the comments can be emailed to you.
Also move the dot on the Show word verification to NO...........SAVE SETTINGS...............
See how you go.
I know there have been quite a few posts about this so do what works for you.............
I'll add this post to "how to...........blog bits" on the sidebar

Better go hang out the washing...........cloudy and breezy here but no rain and definitely no flooding like down south..........goodluck if you're in the very wet weather area...........
Summer is officially over but we have enjoyed the most mildest summer ever..............

.........take care til next time.....Chookyblue.........

Thanks for doing this, I've been wondering what to do, I just followed your instructions ... lets see what happens (hopefully nothing).

I changed mine and do get a couple spams a day but they go to the spam box, so so far so good!!! Wish they would have kept it the way it was.

I turned mine off awhile ago. I found the verification words difficult to read & the process of putting my glasses on & turning myself upside down to try & make the words out, a trial.
Cheers...Jane.

It is worth a try although I haven't had any problems. Thanks.

Hmmm, I might give it a go. I've had the odd spam comment anyway so the verification really isn't putting those spammers off anyway.

I changed mine yesterday and got hit by spam but I didn't change to the google thingy which I think I will. That verification thing was driving me nuts also I can never work out what the letters are supposed to be.

I turned mine off for one day and had 17 spams about porn and other stoff in my commentbox. So I choose to have it.

I find it really difficult to decipher the word verification words.....so will turn it off and see how it goes........which means all the robots out there will be able to leave comments!

It has been a problem on a few blogs that I visit....I do not have set for mine and I do not allow anonymous posting. I have not had spam problems...any that show up go to the spam box. Thanks for the info on how to for those who need it.

I did a post a couple of days ago about the annoyance of word verification - I'm so happy to know I'm not alone in my frustrations and am grateful to everyone who has turned it off!
Thanks for doing the tutorial

Personally I don't mind even the new word verification. But as you say, I know it drives others bonkers. So all switched off here.

Thanks for this Chooky - I turned mine off a long time ago (as per your advice when I had some bad spam) and use comment moderation for posts over XXX days old. Works well as I just check the spam folder every so often and "delete all".

It's like everything in this crazy fast paced world. Nothing ever stays the same for more than a minute. Too bad if we like the changes or not just have to go with the flow. Maybe the double word will be a deterrent for the scammers etc as they will have to think more and we know they don't have a brain for that otherwise they would be busy using it for good instead of nasty.I won't be turning mine off as I don't like taking the risk. Not after my last huuuuuuuuuuuge computer crash. Thanks for the tips.

I hadn't thought about the users with google account option. Thanks for these instructions.

I don't have the 'old interface' come up when I click on the cog? Any suggestions for a computer dummy?

Thanks for the info, Chooky...not sure what to do...don't like the idea of porn spam, although I'm not too familiar with spam so not sure what it really is or comes onto your comments like. I have been very fortunate. I'd hate to think people, ie my bloggy friends, were frustrated with leaving comments on my blog. I need to really sit down and have a look at this....

I turned mine off too...I got a couple Spam comments, but I think it's easier with it off...I hate the 2 word verification...what a pain!

You are always so helpful! thanks! Not sure how long Google will keep the old interface. Not a fan of the new one. Heck, not only can't I find anything anymore, but I can't even read the darn letters on the robot thingy and I think I'm human! ;o) Keep well!

Great info Chooky....I turned my off and yes I get SPAM, but thankfully blogger has blocked them. You always make things so easy to understand and we all appreciate it very much.
