I use Google Reader, which I prefer to Bloglines. I haven't got to grips with Followers yet, something to learn about soon. Like you, I have too many blogs in my list, but I do try and prune it occasionally so that I don't spend too much time on the computer. You haven't been cut yet though!!

I'm hearing you. Its quite stressful at times isn't it. I have a huge list on RSS, so each time someone does a post I know. I have my faves at the top (you are up there) and occasionally prune off the bottom. (Usually when my husband starts giving me grief over my long list). I was enjoying people adding themselves to my followers list until, shock, horror, someone removed themselves after I didn't post for about three days. It was like being dropped by a good friend. I was quite shattered. I then took the blog roll off my sidebar, I was spending too much time making sure I had everyone on it and not concentrating on quilting and recording my adventures. Oh the dramas of blogging.

I know where you are coming from. When I'm on the computer, I seem to ad more each time. I find I cant delete any of them. Im not sure what to do. Let me know when you find out.

I started off saving to 'My Favourties' till it got too much and then I found Bloglines.
I don't think you can have to many, can you?
I'm just getting into Followers.

I can´t manage it, blogging will turn into a full time job if I can´t stop myself.... I just discovered Google Reader and liked it. But I can´t stop myself from following links and discovering new blogs, no end. But it´s fun and inspiring and I love it, but takes too much time...

I wish I had the answer! You have actually jolted me into action though and made me think "what do I expect from the blogs I have listed on my sidebar"??? I know I like people that blog often at least once a week unless they are going on holidays or something which is understandable. You know what Chooky...I am going to have a blog reduction done to my ever growing list!! lol!! Maybe I need to be ruthless...I hope people understand it's not a personal attack but better blog management! What does everyone else think??

Looks like an interesting topic, you might have to summarize your findings for us. It seems everyone has similar problems.

Love the hibiscus! I still don't know what bloglines are. I used to follow through my favourites but now I have a thingy in my blog that tells me when people have posted. It's great because I don't have to look up blogs that haven't posted. Cherrie

willywagtail said...

I forgot to say that my thingy also tells me the name of the post so when I am too busy I only select those that I think will interest me that day. I guess that shows that informative headings are important. Cherrie

I use Google Reader. I delete the ones that no longer interest me any longer. Makes things more manageable. I try to check it daily so keep it under control. Then I get little bits of goodness at a time.

May Britt said...

I'm using bloglines. And visit only the blogs that has posted a new post.
I try to split it into favorits and new blogs I want to check out. So if there is nothing interesting in these new blogs for a while I delete them . Are they interesting I move them up to favorites.

fortunately Bloglines is existing ... almost 234 blogs in mine !!! It's very useful and convenient !
Sorry for my english which is not as good as I want it to be but I enjoy so much visiting you.

On my blog (Cootie Bug 2) I have added FOLLOWERS so people can follow me. I like this new feature. And have listed the blogs that I follow in my sidebar. I like this feature because the new posts appear very quickly, plus I can click on a link of theirs from my blog page and it brings up another page while mine stays in the background. However, I have used Bloglines forever and I still have a long list. I haven't yet decided to scrap it and I still check it out. Since the new posts are highlighted, it's easy enough to scan through the list. The reason I keep using it is because I have too many blogs on Bloglines to put them all on my blog sidebar, so I can still follow them on Bloglines. Later I may decide to purge some of them but as you know it's difficult sometimes to do that. I confess I don't read every word, I pick and choose to read what appears to be of interest to me. I try to comment as much as possible but there are many who use word verification which makes commenting a bit slower, and so on. I haven't followed along to links to newer blogs much lately because of time issues, but I would love to. There's so many great blogs out there to be discovered, I feel.
Good luck with whatever you do.

I don't use anything other than my memory. I have a few favourites I check each morning, other than that I blog surf or check out blogs when I remember. I like it that way and works for me. x Janelle

Another Google Reader user here. I do like that I can view a list style or expanded style.

Kate said...

I just add them to my favourites, and also follow links from other blogs. I've never heard of google reader but it sounds great.

I do have a list on my blog of blogs I read everyday.

Nancy said...

I use google reader. There is a setting so that only those blogs that are updated show up.

Donna said...

I use bloglines and only read the updated feeds. Then I read my favorites first. I do want to investigate the followers thing also. Love your blog!

Thimbleanna said...

Hi Donna! Boy, with all the inspiration out there, it's sure a challenge, isn't it? I organize my fav blogs into files (daily, weekly, "big people" (famous people that I'll never comment on but still enjoy) embroidery, quilting, location, etc.) that seem to make sense at the time. Sometimes my less read files just have to be zeroed out to get caught up again. ( switched from bloglines to google reader (it updates faster) but the file system works in both tools.

Now -- what is follower? I've never heard of it!

corry said...

I'm a bit un-orginazed so I use them all! Lately I use google reader more. Sometimes its hard to keep up and I lost track of blogs but luckely I usually find them back again!

I also use Google Reader, does a lot of the work for me. Easy to use and a time saver.

Unknown said...

I use google reader, I could never figure out how to use bloglines...lol.. and rss didn't always want to play nice. Google reader has all the new posts highlighted, too easy.

rachel griffith said...

you know what???
i always start with the blogroll on my blog.
from there i find new blogs to look at off of those blogs.
{names catch my interest so i start clicking.}
and when i get bored i google 'quilting blogs' and click 'posted in last hour' then read those ones.

i know it's not genius, but it's what i do.

Stina Blomgren said...

I do a little bit of both... :o)

But mostly I use RSS in my own mailprogram and that is what I like best..;o)...but am having problems with some typepad blogs and they I have to check through google reader...:o)
Have a little gadget in my dashboard who tells me that someone have posted.. :o)

I use Google reader, it’s fast(er) and easy!

You can import all your fauvorite blogs from your blog or from bloglines into Google Reader.

used to have a list on my blog...then i tried bloglines and it kept messing up and i switched to google reader..i love it. i have my blogs organized into folders...that helps me manage it a bit more. i know i have too many in there...almost 300...yikes

I have a very long list on RSS feeds (think you need Internet Explorer 7 to use it). I find it helpful, because I get to know when someone publish a new post, and I don`t have to go through every blog on my list to find out who have posted lately. I highly recommend it to those who want to try something new.

I`ve been thinking of removing the list in my sidebar because it is not possible for me to update every time I add a new blog to my RSS feeds list, but haven`t done it yet.

I use Google Reader and find it very good. I can put the blogs I read into different folders. This allows for easy picking and choosing of blogs I want to read.

No scrapping there!! lolol I've got a ton of blogs I read but I dont wanna give up any. Unless of course maybe I dont hear from them ever then why take up that space??? There I helped you make a decision.

West Michigan Quilter said...

I do several things. I surf and when I find a list of blogs on someone's blog that I like, I'll start checking those out. Also, if I find a blog I like I'll sign or do the RSS feed list. I think I like the RSS list best because then I can see when they've been updated. I just love to see what others are doing. I think I found some really nice blogs by first going to your blog. Of course, I'm returning to your blog because I like it too and depend you you to let me know what is out there.

I just have mine in my favorites! Have good intentions of using bloglines but just need to catch up and have a few spare hours (what are they??) to get my head around it and get organised. I have too many too but as sure as I scrap someone I'll miss something!!!! Have a small number I check every day....the others sometimes take a week to get around to.

I have Google Reader and also Bloglines. I don't use Google Reader. Bloglines is easier for me I think!! I'm pretty sure that you put me onto Bloglines in the first place!!! And I hear you.... on having too many in the list.... but yes... who do I cut out?? NO ONE!

I love Google reader...especially the feature where you can star a post and refer to it again and again...I used to use Bloglines...but they were always having issues.

I'm a follower, I still have bloglines on my sidebar but it's much easier to work off your dashboard. This lists all the blogs you follow with a highlight of the latest post so you can decide whether you want to view the page or not. It also reduces the amount of download I use therefore making DH happy too.

rachelmp said...

I don't mind adding to the blogroll list on my sidebar so that others can find the links too. I think there is no problem adding or subtracting from this list. So many great blogs out there! I'm really pleased to find followers too and I hope people support followers by visting their blogs too

I use Google Reader too... and I have WAY too many blogs that I lurk on that way. I'm trying to make an effort to actually comment this week - it takes even more time than just reading lol

Hi Donna, I have my blog list on the side and it grows daily. I have it where if they post something new it shows. The only thing it has gotten so long and I'm still finding new ones that I love to read and all the creativness that everyone has, it's fun to go visit. So I will keep them all and probably still add, just visit when I can. Doesn't hurt to have a long list and maybe someone else will go and visit them.

I used to use My Favourites, but it takes forever to go through each one to see which have been updated. Now I use the follow function in blogger so that I can just check out blogs with updates. Havent added them all yet, but I'm getting there!

Hi,
I made maps in my bookmarks. I put all blogs I want to follow in them, depending on how often they publish, I have a daily, a mondag/wednesday/friday a tuesday/friday, a tuesday, a thirsday and that will be the day I open this map and read all the blogs. Get the idea? Oh yes, then there is the "once in a while" map.

Julz said...

Nice new header on your blog. I use Bloglines and have started using followers as well... there are so many fantastic blogs to catchup on... Hugs Jx

I use My Blog List in my side bar ( I think that is what you are calling bloglines ) and it is set to put the most recently updated blog on that list at the top. Then when I come in to check blogs I start reading at the top and if time permits work my way down to those I read previously. My gripe would be it dosen't always update, ( till I make a new post or alter something in my blog)Other times it is really useful.
I guess we are spoilt for choice!
I also list all those blogs plus others I sometimes visit in my favourites list.

My bloglines has so many blogs in it, i dont use it often. It gets too scary. I just use my blog roll and my favorites now, and of course there is the randon surfing where I just blog hop and have a great time.

I use NetNewsWire to read blogs. It's free software and so easy to use. Of course it's way too easy to keep adding feeds and end up with way too much to read! So now and then I purge when I can't remember why I added someone and I can't find anything to comment on in their recent posts. I wish I could keep them all, but I just can't.

Anne Heidi said...

I use bloglines, and I think it works well for me. I also have started to add a bloglist on the sidebar of my blog.

Cara said...

I use the blogroll link follower so I can at a quick glance of my list see who has updated and then I read them. Some days I do not get them all read but I try! Never used bloglines but sounds like google reader is popular. There are sooooo many great blogs out there it is getting hard to read them all every day and even harder to pare down the ever growing list! I am interested in what you find out though.

I can't get around the blogs I follow now so I just don't have time to follow more.
But Ms Chookyblue, I have a question for you. Has your bloglines started to email you everytime one of your bloggers has a new post. This is not a bad idea. I reminds me to check out blogs and drop by to say hello.

I'm way behind in the times and don't even know what bloglines is, are... I don't know... Anyway I personally use my favorites to follow the ones I really and truely enjoy reading up on.

I use Bloglines so it works for me. Although I get stressed if I haven't been able to check for a few days and there's a zillion posts to catch up on.

Hi Donna,
I use RSS feeds ... can see at a glance who has a new post. I organise this by country, blogname, bloggers name eg AUSTRALIA - Aunties Quaint Quilts (Christine). Works well for me. I also do the follower thing ... a quick way of seeing what my favourite bloggers are posting about. However, still never seem to be caught up with everyone!

I use Google Reader. I switched over from Bloglines as I was finding Bloglines was really slow at adding new posts. I love the fact that Google Reader allows you to show just those blogs that have updated rather than the whole great long list.

Sandi Linn Andersen said...

I pretty much did not know what blogging was a year ago and I am still learning the "ins and outs". I have a bloglist where I keep the blogs that I want to have just a click away. Then sometimes I go to my followers link and so on. What I have found recently is that the more I blog and offer designs and giveaways, the less time then that I have to troll through blogland and read and enjoy others blogs. Going to try to even that out so I can enjoy and share at the same time! :-)

Well...that was very interesting reading....I use bloglines because chookyblue helped me to set it up and it works well for me. I think I'd like to try google reader....but again I will probably need help....lol....

Bloglines and Google Reader.
I get too many feeds this way and I have noticed I have some favourites - less than 20 a time. This group changes over time but I have not deleted any blogs from the list. I just do not read them, then I read /scroll through/ let say 56 posts on one blog at a time ;) and keep up. I read some blogs regularly but at big interval 5-10-15-30 days and some just from time to time once in a blue moon :)
I do not add any blogs to the favorites on my machine, as I will have to export favorites if I change it.

Bloglines! and I am ruthless..... keeping it culled to 50 feeds ATM. Naturally you are one of them dear friend!

Bloglines ..i use to use google reader and had a few problems. I don't know how you do it some times I find it really daunting. When I get behind on reading and emailing.
