No "M@sterchef" but I can cook scones...........

My nightly addiction on TV is M-a-s-t-e-r-c-h-e-f  - for those out of Oz it is a group of everyday people vying to be come the M-a-s-t-e-r-c-h-e-f and win a cookbook deal and other things............
now I am no M-a-s-t-e-r-c-h-e-f and I don't want to be .......
.....they cook all kinds of weird things at times......
....BUT....
this week they had to cook scones, lamingtons, fruit cake, some other cake and a jam for 100 CWA ladies (CWA=Country Womens Association who are renowned for cooking the above WELL)
I will give them some grace as in you do get used to baking on your own oven and all ovens are a bit different BUT they were a complete disaster.....
.........it was so funny and probably embarrassing for the show hosts......
They had to cook as teams and I would not have picked either teams as winners.....
.....but I just want to say
i'm no M-a-s-t-e-r-c-h-e-f but i can cook scones
as it is freezing 7 deg and rainy here today I have cooked some for the kids who are just about to walk in the door and start 2 weeks of school holidays..............and I have a week off too.....even better...throw the routine out the door........
Catch you later..............

PS I promise I will get back to the "what is this" post next............

I'm not a bad cook - but I'm crap at scones. Yours look MAGNIFICENT - can I have one ;)? Please ;))? Or at least the recipe?

I love making scones, of course then I have to eat them AND have the jam AND the cream.....sigh!! Hmmm, might have to make some now...
They were woeful weren't they? I'm a masterchef tragic, watch it every night and have to say that I did the whole 'I would have blitzed that tonight...' thing, but I would, even with a strange oven I reckon most of us would have done better....
Off to make some scones now, thanks chooky.

It was a most entertaining episode! Your scones would have won hands down. It is funny that good cooks cannot master some of the simple recipes that we learnt as kids.

Your scones look magnificent. You've inspired me to make some tomorrow, it's been a while. It will definitely be the weather for something warm straight out of the oven.

they look divine, love scones and love cooking them, I used to make pinwheel scones when I was a kid, you know the one's rolled with mixed fruit and brown sugar, must make them one day

I'd better go and put dinner on now, since your scones look so yummy I am now feeling hungry. Didn't see the show on Wednesday night because was at rehearsal, but heard a fair bit about it last night at stitching, LOL

I was watching that show too think "you have got to be kidding". My grandma taught me to cook scones when I was about 8yo, I reckon I could do it with my eyes closed.

Nice looking scones Chook, I can make them too, and jam drops and anzac biscuits and chocolate slice. Funny that all these 'masters' haven't mastered the basics. Cold here too,for here, and we are heading west in the wee small hours.....

I love that show also. I think the organisers were a bit cruel in the CWA challenge. Cooking out in the open with strange ovens would not have been easy.I loved watching Adam (I think that's his name) roll the scones as if he was making bread rolls. As soon as I saw that I knew they were going to be tough little balls. I once helped make a lot of lammingtons. The contestants needed our 'dip, flick and roll' technique. Still it's all good entertainment. It has certainly raised the audience's appreciation for food and got people talking. Have a great school holidays.

I found that episode quite uplifting! Cause I can't cook the savory stuff that they can but I can cook jam and fruit cake and scones and neopolaten cake and lamingtons!
I felt so bad for Aaron though....until it turned out that he'd had a lucky escape!
Your scones look absolutely yummo!!! Pass the cream and jam please...

Your scones looks great. I nearly cried with laughter at the poor attempt at baking by the would-be chefs!!!

They expected a lot with the scones, it is a technique. Did you cringe when they were kneaded like bread! We never miss an episode.
How about you put up your recipe and tips and I'll try making them.

Wasn't it so funny! Seeing your lovely scones I might do some tommorrow (I can never get them as good as my Gran did though!)- I have some home-made apricot jam to have with them....

Wow those scones look amazing. Drat I am in NZ atm so looks like I am missing some good masterchef episodes. I am addicted to watching when I am home.

I cannot miss this show and was so sad when it ended last year. LOL!

When I saw Aaron(?) kneading the scone dough, I turned to my DIL and laughed. We both said at the same time, "he's gonna make rocks". LOL!

I reckon they're all city kids coz the art of baking these basics is still strong in the country. Well, it is where I live. Go to any golf club, cricket club, bowls club, funeral....... any function and you'll get a taste of all these beautys..... and they're all light, fluffy and absolutely delicious. Yep, I reckon they're city kids. LOL!

Your scones look yum! Those contestants might be great cooks, but they cant bake to save themselves.

Yes, you sure can cook scones Chooky, they look yum!
Do you make the lemonade ones?...I love pumpkin scones from my old 50+ yrs School cook book, "The Golden Wattle "..so easy!

Yes! I sat there in disbelief, watching them 'kneading' then 'rolling' the scones like pastry! No, no, no! I too can cook good scones and oh my, have you tried the CWA Scone Mix - an absolute never fail mix - just add water and 'be gentle'. Cooking outdoor and in strange ovens would be difficult though.

Cheers - Joolz

Great scones...you masterchef you!

Jenny said...

That was sure a funny episode-I remember that you can cook scones I remember you posted your recipe-I'll have to try and find it-yours would have certainly won!

Joolz said...

Ok, so I went to the CWA website and got the recipe for their scones. I have made a batch and they are tough and doughy so I think the recipe is dodgy. I have always used SR flour but theirs calls for plain flour and baking powder. Will stick to my recipe of will use their CWA mix in future.

Cheers - Joolz

We are loving M/chef in our house as well, I can sit and stitch my Gardeners Journal while watching it.... hope it doesn't end too soon.
Have to go and make some scones now to have with my home-made apricot jam (home-grown..of course) because your scones look so delicious.

We sat there incredulous and couldn't believe what we were watching!!!!! (of course our baking is perfect!!! not quite up to your scone standard though!!)

If you can make scones I want the recipe!
